Therapy vs. Life Coaching

Life coaching and psychotherapy both aim to help individuals improve their lives, but they differ in purpose, scope, and approach. In some cases, individuals might benefit from a combination of both, as they address different but complementary aspects of personal growth.

Psychotherapy

Purpose

Psychotherapy addresses mental health concerns, emotional challenges, and psychological issues, often helping individuals heals from past trauma or manage mental illnesses.

Scope

Deals with the past, present, and future. Therapy explores underlying psychological issues, emotions, and patterns of behavior that may be holding a person back or causing distress.

Approach

Uses evidence-based techniques rooted in psychology (e.g. cognitive behavioral therapy, psychoanalysis.)

The therapist helps clients understand and resolve deeper issues that impact their well-being.

Focus is often on emotional healing, mental health, and creating long-term change.

Qualifications

Therapists must have advanced training and licensure (e.g. licensed counselor, psychologist, or psychiatrist). They are trained to diagnose and treat mental health conditions.

Life Coaching

Purpose

Life coaching is a collaborative process which focuses on achieving personal or professional goals, improving performance, and creating a better future through accountability.

Scope

Oriented toward the present and future, helping individuals identify goals and overcome obstacles to achieve them. Life coaches often address areas such as career development, relationships, health, or general self-improvement.

Approach

Structured, action-oriented, and focused on specific outcomes.

Life coaches provide guidance, tools, and strategies to empower clients to take action.

Life coaching assumes that the client is mentally healthy and capable of implementing change.

Qualifications

Life coaches are not required to have formal mental health training, though many obtain certifications through professional coaching organizations. Choose a coach with experience in areas relevant to your goals, consider coaching style, reviews, and how comfortable you are during the consult.
